Word XP won't open some previous Word files

When I try to open a Word document set up in an earlier version of Word (either 97 or 2000), it displays an error message 'The document name or path is not valid'. This has happened on a few previous Word documents, but will open other previous Word docs. The document has not been moved.

Is this an issue with Word XP, and can I try anything else to open the files?

How are you trying to open the documents? Are you using File/Open?
