Friends cannot open my doc's (XP Office Professional)
using their Office (97 or 2000). Isn't XP downwardly
compatible?

Yes, it is, but you need to save in the format that your friends older
version can accommodate. File Save/As and chose an older DOC format, or
in a more generic RTF format.

The default Word 2002 format should be openable in either Word 97 or Word
2000, though some features may be degraded. If you want to make the
documents completely interchangeable, go to Tools | Options | Save and
select "Disable features introduced after Word 97." It should not be
necessary to save as RTF.
