I tried creating my own 'default' settings via 'tools -
options - customise'. When I try closing/exiting
application: the icons revert to application default, my
settings to not 'take', the icon fail to accept the 'two
rows' selection, etc.

Same thing happens for my file manager - I prefer
the 'list' view - but the application ALWAYS reverts to
the 'large icon' view whenever I depart to another folder.

FRUSTRATION!!!

Why does the application fail to retain my settings?

Excel, Access, and Powerpoint each accept my settings.

'Refresh' does not work.

When you quit Word, are you being prompted to save Normal.dot? Are you
saying yes?
