I have a resume that I have saved as a Word document.

My problem is I am having difficulty because most (if not all of the places I have sent my resume to are using PCs and not MACs and they e-mail me back and request that I submit my resume in Word Format.

Is there anything I can do?

Hello Adeline;

Quite honestly, I'd be very reluctant to send a résumé in any Word format in
the first place. It's far too easy for the recipient to "doctor" it. See if
they'll take a PDF instead - that's far preferable.

If they insist on a Word format then they should be keeping their software
updated. The files you're saving are most likely in the newer 2007/08 OXML
(.docx) format, but properly updated WinWord 2000 or later should be able to
open them with no problem. However you can use File> Save As & select Word
97-2004 to save a copy in the older (.doc) format which should present no
problem for most any version of Word still in use - PC or Mac.

Another - even more likely - issue, however, is that their mail servers are
mucking up the file. To avoid that issue:

Make sure you save with a file name extension - check the box for that
purpose in the Save As dialog,

Be certain that your email program is appropriately set for
"Windows-Friendly" attachments - how to do so depends on which email program
you're using. In Apple's Mail it's in Edit> Attachments, in Entourage it's
in Preferences> Compose - Encode For:__. You can use Any Computer
(AppleDouble) although it's probably better to select Windows (MIME/Base64).

Finally, zip the file & attach the zipped copy in order to further protect
it from being mangled on the way to its destination.

Thanks for the help. I asked my daughter about this too - she suggested Rich Text format. I tired that and e-mailed my resume to her - (she was a PC with Windows XP and it worked.
