BOB LAPOINTE

I have previously contacted microsoft regarding this
problem with no one being able to give me a satisfactory
answer. (I have windows xp) It start a few weeks ago the
program I was running was word 2000 which was working
fine and all of a sudden it was not working, could not
enter the program. I deleted the program and re-
installed it at microsoft suggestion. After several time
it finally worked but I could not enter "file or Tools".
I purchased a new version thinking it was a software
problem and my daughter needed Powerpoint for school. I
got word 2002. I deleted the old program and installed
Word 2002, Excel and Powerpoint. Excel and Powerpoint and
Word work fine but I still cannot enter "file or Tools"
in Word. When I click on these I get a message and get
kicked out of the program. Can anyone tell me what is
wrong and what I can do to finally get this program to
work properly. I am frustrated with Microsoft and
getting frustrated with this program...tks...BOB

I am having the same problem and it happened just a week
ago and it is exactly like you describe. Thanks for
telling me that you bought an updated version becasue I
had the same idea. It seems like there is something else
going on. I updated some patches from Microsoft recently,
have you? Does Microsoft ever read these messages?

Hi Bob,

Does the error occur if you start Windows in Safe Mode? If not then it
could be a sign of an incorrect or corrupt graphics driver. Obtain an
updated driver from the manufacturer's web site and see if that
resolves the problem.

If the error still occurs in Windows Safe Mode then see if the error
occurs when you start Word in Safe Mode. Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error doesn't occur then more than likely the problem is due to
one of the following:

Corrupt Normal.dot: Locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot.
Word will create a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

Global Template/Add-in: To determine if you are using any global
templates go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any
global templates or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of
your Startup folders. The location of the Word\Startup folder can be
found under Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder
can be found in the Office installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins. COM are added via the
Registry rather than the Startup folders. To determine whether or not
you are using COM Add-In you can add the "COM Add-in" command to your
toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

First point is that reinstalling NEVER works. Office/Word leaves all the
registry entries behind, normal.dot isn't removed as are none of the third
party add-ins and macros (the usual suspects) by uninstalling and
reinstalling.

What you should do is follow the FAQ for troubleshooting at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

Finally, your symptoms are pretty much the signs of virus. Have you scanned
your system with an up to date Virus Scanner?
