Word03 will not let me view or crop photos in document

If I insert a photo I have on my computer from my digital camera ... Word
will put it in but I can only view it when I click on Print Preview. I can't
even crop the photos. I open up the picture toolbar but the crop tool is not
accessible to me -- anyone know why? I want to create a document that I can
shrink my photos and have captions, etc.
