Word2000 Open File dialog Kills all formatting in file

D

Dan S.

Symptoms:

Use the OPEN BUTTON from the FILE menu or the standard toolbar to open a MS Word 2000 doc and it drops ALL formatting (images, font type/size/color/style, horizontal seperator bars or lines, etc) and opens the file as if it is PLAIN TEXT. (* Opening file through the MS Word 'Open File' dialog window)

Double-click on the file itself...
.....or go to START->Documents for recently opened files...
.....or start Word and pick a recently opened file from the FILE menu...and the doc will open normally and KEEP all it's formatting.

Troubleshooting notes so far:

Customer has not changed anything on their PC and problem just arose in past 3 weeks or so.

E-mailing the files to a technician and we have confirmed that the docs themselved will open fine on another system. Problem is with Either MS Office install or her PC. PC is a NEW (* setup, tested, delivered and working fine less than 6 months ago) Dell OptiPlex 270 that has been preloaded with a standard, widely used Windows 2000 image for our location. I am inclined to believe there is a problem/setting/bug with Office at this time. PC runs fine otherwise, no problems or errors in any other apps.

We use GroupWise e-mail and I have confirmed that GW integrations setting, ODMA32 registry key for GW integrations, GWNORMUS dictionary, and custom XLSTART file do not exist or are disabled on this system (* known bugs that have been fixed successfully in the past with no problems - also part of standard setup on hundreds of similar PCs that are working fine.)

I have reset the file menu and toolbars to the Normal ones (Defaults) used when Office 2000 is installed.

I have Scanned for virusses with NAVce and the latest virus pattern from Norton/Symantec and come up clean.

I have performed a repair on Office 2000.

I have uninstalled and re-installed Office 2000 Pro from our Corporate CDs and run ALL MS Office 2000 updates.

Problem persists!!!

Any ideas/help are greatly appreciated.

In the File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover
Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents."
