Word2000 opens slowly

I am confused as to how to fix this or where to go, in
order to fix this problem. I can Open WORD 2000 by
doubleclicking desktop icon, and can access a file easily
from there.It will open right up! No hesitation. BUT, if I
go from Start-->Documents and try to click on a recently
viewed Word Doc? It opens so slowly that I can't tell if
it's working or not, and then all of a sudden, it opens.
If I go to the drive directly where I stored a particular
file I want to access, instead of opening Word and then
finding the file, then I can't open it that way either. I
have seen other threads about the normal.dot being
corrupt, but I dont understand how to access it? I have
done the run--type in winword.exe /a and WORD opens no
prob. I'm stuck from then on. Can you help?

If starting Word with the /a switch clears the problem, then it lies in
Normal.dot, the Registry, or an add-in. See
