Word2002: previously saved changes disappear from doc?

hi, this problem has been reported to me by a couple of
individuals in our workplace. I'm relying on the accuracy
of the users' description here, but if anyone can offer a
suggestion I'd love to hear it.

The users update several large documents quite often.
since going to officexp (from 97), they say that on
occassion they can save a document they have been working
on, close it, and its all ok... open it again even say
10mins later, and their latest changes are no longer in
the document. WTF? According to their reports, this
happens often.

The PCs are Windows2000, Word is 2002 SP-2, and the
documents are being saved on a 2000 Server. The documents
are being saved as 'Word Document'. No errors occur at
any point in working on the document or saving it, and to
the best of their knowledge they are the only people who
edit those documents. Background saves, fast saves,
and 'always make backup' are not enabled.

thanks,
myth-unit

answering my own thread here, but...
more searching the forum found this from Bob Buckland:
Do a search for *.tmp;~$*.* files on the folders
he has access to. If Word can't delete temp files
it creates it will continue to think the file is
still in use. You can also get this with some
antivirus software that keeps track of files that
are open and doesn't let go of that information when
the app has already closes it.

will experiment with disabling the antivirus software.
