Word2003 - Mailmerge from Excel truncates

When merging in Office 2003 from an Excel file, if the first row for a column
contains few characters (somewhat below 256) and a next row for that column
contains in excess of 256 charcters then that cell is truncated to 254
characters during the merge.

We also found a work around:
If the first row has any occurrence of a long field then that row and any
subsequent long ones are merged correctly!
