Word2003 vs Memory

Every time I use Word2003 it seem to consume most of my memory.
As a
consequence, many times I have to kill Word in order to close to
program. If I press "Close" it simply hangs 90% of the time.
Also, if I press Crtl-Alt-Delete it shows that most recourses are
allocated to Word.

I am getting pretty annoyed with this and was wondering if there
is a solution to this?
Oh, yes: I got all the patches and updates as far as I can
tell... and physical memory: 1GB....
I imagined this would be enough, but apparently not?!
