Word2007 won't allow mouse insert of letters and problem closing

Constant and recurring problem 6 times on 3 computers using different copies
of software. Vista Business and Office Ultimate 2007 on an HP computer
(laptops desktops).
1. If i try to insert letters into a word or a word into a sentence with a
mouse click that point does not become active - but can get there and insert
using left and right arrow keys
2. Word gives problems closing down
3. Problem starts suddenly - Microsoft and others fix it and then it comes
back (often seems after an MS update). MS seem to be saying it is a MS issue
but ultimately say support expired
4. Reason given relates to something not being re-set in Word registry
(?template) - each time this is altered in two places

Thanks anyone

Run Regedit and delete the Word DataKey.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Thanks Terry -
1. not sure how to "run Regedit"
2. do you mean simply completely delete the complete line that you list
(i.e. you mean it is "the Word DataKey"). My understanding from the past is
that Word simply generates a new and correct version on starting?
3. On each previous occassion MS and others have mentioned two things that
have to be edited - any comment
4. Any idea re cause or prevention - it keeps recurruring to the tune of
probably tens of thousands of dollars downtime and costs on various computers
so far (although now I will know how to fix it myself)

To launch the registry editor, use Start, Run and type in

regedit

and press enter. The editor now opens. Navigate through the registry to the
Word DataKey just like you navigate in Windows Explorer to folders. When you
get to the final bit DATA, delete it:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Word will create a new default DataKey when it is restarted.

I've no idea how to stop the problem because I have never experienced it,
though it is commonly reported.
