Word2008 Crashes

Having a problem with Word2008 on my new MacMini when I try to open documents
created in Word on a PC in Italy. I do not have this problem opening the same
documents with Word2004 running on my old PowerPC G4 with OS10.4

Believe its Word2008, not the OS, because I had the same issue when I
installed Word2008 on my other older Mac running 10.4.

If you haven't applied the updates to Office it would account for the
problem. Make sure you have updated Office 2008 to 12.2.3, then run Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions followed by a restart. Also, you don't
indicate what version of OS X you're running, but whatever it is make sure
that is fully updated as well.

Thanks but that didn't work. I'm running Office 2008 12.2.3. OsX 10.6.2.
Ran the Repair Disk Permissions as you suggested. Same problem. I'm pasting
in the very long crash report.

OK, try this: Launch Word & go directly to Word> Preferences> Spelling &
Grammar. Clear the check on both Check Grammar as you type & Check Grammar
with spelling, then see if you can open one of the problem documents.

If you're successful, reply with a description of the document content
including whether it has Tracked Changes, what language formatting is used,
file size & format plus anything else you can determine about it.

It appears that there may be a problem with the Italian proofing tools,
although I haven't seen any reports of a general nature.

For future reference, posting these extensive error reports in a news
message is virtually pointless. They're intended for the software engineers
to whom they're automatically sent. Nothing beyond "Thread 0 crashed:" means
much to the folks here -- we're primarily users just like you. If anyone
thinks a copy of the report would be useful they'll ask -- and usually
request that you send it by regular email rather than including it here.

Thanks for the suggestion and the lesson on posting etiquette.

Unchecking those two Check Grammar button did solve the problem.

The documents that crashed are all from my collaborator in Italy. Some have
Track Changes but some do not. Size also varies- most recent one was 127 kb
but others are 4-5 Mb. They are listed as Microsoft Word 97-2004 documents.
You asked for language formating- not sure how to tell. The document is
written in english with standard keyboard characters, but I suspect that's
not what you meant.

I'm afraid that doesn't solve the problem, it only relieves the symptom, so
let's take it a little further

Create a copy of one of the documents that presented the problem, turn Track
Changes OFF if necessary, accept/reject all changes, then save the document
as .docx with whatever name you want to give it.

Next, key Command+A to Select All, then go to Tools> Language. Select the
appropriate flavor of English then save & close the file after you OK out of
the Language dialog.

Turn the grammar features back on (you'll have to create a blank doc to
change the Preferences settings), reopen the new file & see if it explodes.

Thanks. Your approach worked perfectly. Of note, I tried leaving the edits
in/Track changes on, changing the language and saving as a .docx with the
Grammar Check off and then reopening with Grammar Check on, and that worked
fine also. That mattered as we are editing documents so I need to see them.

Any hope that MS might fix this glitch?

OK, that's progress But it really isn't so much a "glitch" that MS can
fix ‹ there's only so much a document can take.

No offense or disrespect for you or your collaborator, but the problem most
likely is caused by how the document has been constructed & edited... One of
the most surreptitious contributors is indiscriminate copying from other
sources, but a lack of insight on the importance of Language formatting &
how it works in Word are significant contributors as well.

When exchanging documents with anyone using a different language edition of
the program it becomes even more important. Pasting as plain text & handling
all formatting by the appropriate use of Styles [rather than "direct
formatting"] is key. Tracking changes exacerbates the complexity, especially
if the tracking is being done continuously. What you appear to be running
into is a degree of corruption in those documents as a result of at least
some of these considerations as well as a few others.
