Word97 document closes on activating hyperlink path to file

Bobby

Upon activating a hyperlink to an excel file on a network
from within a Word document that was created by exporting
an Access report to an rtf. file, the link functions
correctly, opening the excel file, but the Word document
containing the link automatically closes. How do I
prohibit the from occurring.

Thanks for any assistance.

Upgrade to a newer version???

Seriously though, this is a nuisance in Word 97.

It's easier to fix in later versions of Word but for Word 97 there are
a
couple of options. First if the document is dirty, (contains unsaved
changes) then it will stay open. In documents others create I just
press
my spacebar to dirty the document.

For documents that I create with hyperlinks you can add the /n switch
to
prevent the document from closing. What I have found is that this
isn't
as easy as editing the hyperlink field and adding the switch. I don't
know why, but I do know what will work. :)

You need to use the following steps:

1) Go to Insert/Field
2) Select Hyperlink
3) In the text box type or paste a URL inside of quotes
4) Click the Options button and add the /n switch
5) Click OK to insert the Hyperlink field

For multiple hyperlinks I found copying/pasting a link and changing
the
address in the hyperlink field was the easiest way to go. Note to
display the Hyperlink field use <Alt F9> to toggle the field codes.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
