Word97 Print Problem

E

Installed a new HP Deskjet. When I try to print from the FILE-PRINT
command I get a Mircrosoft error message saying it has to close the
program and would I like to send the error message to Microsoft. I can
print what is on-screen, a .doc file, by using the printer icon on the
tool bar. But this option does not allow me to print, for instance,
specific pages from a document or what I wish to highlight as a
selection. HP technical help says this is a Word problem. I am using
Word97. Anyone have any experience with this and a fix? Thanks.

Well Word 97 is well over 10 years old and if there was a Word bug, it would
surely have been found by now! I would suspect that as this is a new
printer, HP only checked compatibility with most recent version of Word -
possibly as far back as Word 2000.

I suggest that you start by deleting and reinstalling the printer, but make
sure you have checked that you have the latest driver from the HP support
site.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. I 'fixed' the problem some days ago
just as you suggested. I deleted the HP software and re-installed it.
I could then print from the file command. Then the problem came back.
I again deleted the HP software and re-installed their latest driver.
It seems to be working now, but I'm not really confident that it will
stay fixed. I wanted to know if anyone else has gone through this
problem and what the permanent fix is. I don't know if a later version
of Word will be any better. If you have any knowledge of this, please
let me know.

P.S. It is a new printer, D2460 and I could not get HP techs to
research it at all. They were very quick, by the way, to blame it on
Word, even though the fix was re-installing HP's driver.

The poor support from HP has been prevalent on many of the Newsgroup I use.
This is a turn around as until recently, HP Printers always had a good
reputation for sound drivers and good support. I guess this is fallout from
the HP/Compaq merger.

I am reluctant to suggest that this is definitely an incompatibility with
Word 97 or that using a newer version of Word would resolve the problem.
However, in terms of being a better wordprocessor, then upgrading to Word
2003 would be recommended.

A friend of mine has Office XP for Small Business (which he has been
having major problems with!) and said that I could have it. Can one
just install Word from this suite as a standalone?

Yes, sure. You can run Office Setup, choose advanced options and select
exactly what you want to install. You will get more features than Word 97
but Office XP was a bit of a lemon.

I've just spoken to my friend and he also has a unused Word 2002,
which I can also use. What is your opinion of that program? Also, if
necessary, can I uninstall the 2002 and go back to my 97? One never
knows nowadays what really works and with what, so I like to have that
option.

Office 2002 is Office XP. Word 2000 and Word 2003 are the versions I would
recommend (obviously 2003 being the better of the two).
