Word97 v8.0 Windows 98 Spell check grey

Dear Mpv's,
I am having a problem with Spell checker in Word97
version 8.0 and Outlook Ex. running on a Toshiba Satellite
under Windows 98. The spell checker on both programs is
greyed out. In Word Tools/Options/spelling & Grammar -
Spelling is greyed out but grammar is fine and allows
modification and seems to work as intended. I read with
interest what you suggest at --

I have tried this fix without avail. I believe the problem
may, in fact, be in the Registry but elsewhere. I am
reluctant to mess around in this file as the consequence
might overwhelm the intended effect and the result, at
least to myself, be unpredictable. I would be interested
in any further advice that you may have on this topic. All
lexicon and Thesaurus files seem to be in place, but je ne
sais croix.

Check the folder [C:]\program files\common files\microsoft shared\proof.

What files are there? It does not suffice to just have lexicon files: you
also need the corresponding DLLs.

Under Tools, Options, Language, make sure that the language is correctly set
and not set to no proofing. Also, the language must be set the same as the
Language settings in Control Panel, Keyboard.
