Wordart not functioning properly

When I go to create a wordart object of, for example, my name, and choose the
fill effect i want, all that appears is a blank wordart object with the six
resize marks around it.

I thought to begin with that the line and fill colours may be set to white
so I tried to change them by going to format wordart on the right click menu.
However the format wordart option is ghosted out and therefore i a out of
ideas.

Any help on this matter is greatly apprectiated.

Tools | Options | View: check the box for "Drawings" and clear the box for
"Picture placeholders."
