Wordcount : one style only

K

Karen Lipkow

Hi,

Does anyone know whether it is possible to automatically count the words
of just one style ? In my case, I need to know the number of words in
all paragraphs of the "text" style, but not those of the "Figure legend"
style, which are interspersed all over the document.

Thanks in advance,
Karen

Hi Karen,

You could define the "Figure legend" style with "Font > [x] hidden"
temporarily.

Don't display hidden text, and the word count should only encompass the
visible text.

Then undo the "[ ] hidden" in the style definition.

Klaus

Hi Klaus,

Thank you, this is a great tip ! It works beutifully on small
documents, but when I try it on my 222-page, 29-style, heavily
cross-referenced thesis, Word crashes every time.

Best wishes,
Karen

Hi Karen,

You never said what version of OS and Office/Word you are using. I don't
know if it will help, but be sure whatever versions you're in are updated.
If you're in OS X, you should be updated to 10.1.5 or, if in Jaguar, 10.2.6.
As for Office, you should be at least at 10.1.2 (10.1.4/10.1.5 are helpful
but not essential at this point).

Then, assuming you're in OS X, run Repair Permissions:

For OS 10.2.x:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:

Also be sure, in Preferences>Save, that you have "Allow Fast Saves" turned
off (and leave it off!) and "Always Make Backup" turned on. To be sure
there's no corruption in your document, turn on Show/Hide formatting, copy
all but the very last paragraph mark of the document, and paste into a
blank, new Word doc.

I hope something here helps.
