Word's paragraph formating sucks, learn from FrameMaker

Word's paragraph formating sucks. It blows up easily and requiring hours of
reformating to fix your document.

You should look at desktop publishing software such as FrameMaker.
There method of creating paragraph formats is stable and does not
arbitrailty run a docuemnt.

Maybe you should learn how to use Word - especially paragraph styles -
instead of complaining that it isn't something it wasn't designed to be.
Word is a word processor, not a narrowly-focussed desktop publishing
program. Even so, if you take a modicum of time to learn how to use it, it
can do a tolerably good job of desktop publishing too.

One problem I have is that things can fall onto another page if I send
a document to someone else who has a different printer driver
installed. http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm
discusses this, but doesn't explain why it occurs in Word but not in a
DTP programme. Does anyone know the reason? Is there a workaround
using Word? Do other WPs have this problem (eg Writer in Open Office)?

It occurs in Word, because Word uses the current printer driver to format
the document and different printer drivers have different capabilities.
Other applications may use different methods of accessing the printer and
are thus not influenced by the feedback from the printer driver.

Thanks for your explanation. It sounds like a bad way of doing things
if formatting can change as a result.

Is there an up-side to using the current printer driver for
formatting? Perhaps Word has an advantage over other applications
because of this? I can't think of one, but one never knows.
