WordX - Portuguese and english

Nadia og Thore

I write my documents in english, my wife writes her in portuguese. How
should we arrange ourselves to be able to switch between the two as easy as
possible ? In our value pack there was no portuguese dictionary or spelling
checker. Where can we find it ?

Hi Thore:

Does Word v.X offer Portuguese as a language? Word 2004 does, but I thought
Portuguese was not available for Word X??

You need to set up two logins on your computer. You can then set the
default language in one to Portuguese.

Word picks up its language automatically from the OS when it starts. When
your wife logs in, everything will be set to Portuguese, when you login,
everything will switch back to English.

Hope this helps

Hi Thore,

No, there are no Portuguese proofing tools for Word X. You can either
upgrade to Office 2004 or follow these instructions which were posted by
another user:

1. First go to:
http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~excalibr/excalibur.html
and download the freeware spell checker Excalibur 4.0

2. Go to
ftp://ftp.eg.bucknell.edu/pub/mac/Excalibur-dictionaries/Portuguese.hqx
To download the Portuguese spell checker file

3. Install the Portuguese dictionary (just drag the file to Excalibur
folder) in Excalibur, then:
Dictionary/Conversions/Dictionary->Text
Choose the portuguese file and save it (you can use the default Excalibur
format)

4. Open this file in Word X. Select All and Copy. It may take a while, but
it works.

5. In Word Preferences, edit your Custom Dictionary. Paste everything you
have in your clipboard (the text you selected from your exported file from
Excalibur). Save your Custom Dictionary (if you are not using it, it's time
to select it, still in preferences)

6. If you did everything right, you are now using your Main dictionary
(probably English) and your Custom Dictionary from the Excalibur Portuguese
dictionary.

7. If you want the Custom Dictionary to suggest words, unselect the "Suggest
from Main Dictionary only" preference.

Hope this helps.

In addition, there is another option than can prove useful:
Install CocoSpell http://www.ict.usc.edu/~leuski/cocoaspell/
install their Portuguese dictionaries as well.

If you have MacOS X 10.3, TextEdit can open your WOrd X documents and
use CocoAspell to correct spelling in the document :))

CocoAspell patches the System proofing tools to add support for
additional languages so this will work with all applications using the
System spell checker
