Work done by different resources months ago

I'm new to project and have MS Project Standard 2002. I have a Project file I
inherited from someone else. The tasks, start, finish, work, duration,
predecessors, and resource names fields are complete, mostly.

One of the tasks was started almost 6 months ago, assigned to two people who
used 32 of 40 hours on it, and now it must be completed by two different
people, starting tomorrow. I'm trying to tell Project that the start date was
9/4/07, percent complete is 80, and that the remaining work will start
tomorrow, but I'm having no luck. Is it possible to say "Joe spent 8 hours,
Mary spent 24 hours, and now Jack will spend 2 hours and Jill will spend 6
hours and the thing will be done?"

Easiest way to do that would be to go to the Resource Usage view. Grab Joe's
assignment, and drag it down to Jack. Grab Mary's and drag it down to Jill.

This will maintain the historical record, but assign remaining work to the
new resource(s).

Expose the remaining work field for each assignment, then update it with the
appropriate hour spread for each assignment.

You may also want to reschedule the task to recommence as of the current
date (which would be best practice for all unfinished tasks). Easiest way to
do that is Tools > Tracking > Update Project, and then set all remaining work
to start today/tomorrow or whenever.

NB: I know this works in 2003 and 2007. Am 98% sure works in 2002, but
don't have a copy to test on....
