"Work" field in Resource Usage View

Something is happening that I really don't understand and
can't find anything written on it:
I have a large (>1000 lines) Master project - all
subprojects included unlinked - When I show the Resource
Usage View, the left panel shows Name (resource, then
task) and a column for 'Work'. The right panel shows
hours planned (by month in the case I'm working). Some of
the Resources show Work on the same line that is the sum
of work in all the tasks assigned. Some resources show
work assigned, but 0 (zero) hours in the 'Work' summed for
the resource. Some resources show some hours
in 'Work'assigned, but clearly not as much as is entered
in the tasks. I checked and Calculation is on Auto.

Any help?
