The recent "quit word" experience I recounted earlier today was actually not
a real quit. Word, or my computer, froze and when I got word running again
the work menu had defaulted back to the old stuff.
Then I went into preferences-save and checked "prompt to save Normal" (which
I had forgotten). Then I quit normally and when I opened word again, the
work menu had the items I had left on it. I did this twice with the same
result. That's good.
As for "Word will ask you to confirm those changes when you Quit", this
didn't happen. Word just quit. I wasn't asked that question. But the work
menu came back as I had rebuilt it.
Now, even though Work Menu is working, in my preferences files in the system
folder there is nothing called "work menu items" and a Sherlock search
doesn't bring up anything under "work menu". The only thing I see in
preferences under 'work' is "WorkFlowSettings.ini". Now I don't know if I'm
supposed to have "work menu items" in preferences or not because it's
working.
As for 'customized toolbars', they're still not where I placed them. I
can't find where you said 'change normal template to new normal' and how
that relates, and until I do understand I don't want to fool with normal
template because I don't really understand templates. Are templates files
that can be opened so you can see what's in them?

You missed (despite quoting it) the part of the thread where we discussed
the fact that John was mistaken, and the work menu is saved in the
preferences file, *not* the Normal template. So Save All is irrelevant, it
only saves templates, not settings files like the prefs file.
The preferences file also determines which toolbars show up and, I think,
where they are placed, though the customized toolbar itself is saved in the
Normal template. I'm a little unsure exactly how that plays out with your
second problem.
However, if the prefs file is losing work menu items, I'm going to guess a
corrupt prefs? Try creating a new one.
Directions here if you need them:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootWord2001.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)
Alternatively, JE McGimpsey can give you directions for running a macro on
launch that sets your work menu (or maybe I can), if you want to take that
route, if a new prefs still refuses to hold.

Hi,
I forgot to mention that the same thing happens with the items and their
placements in the toolbars at the top of the screen. I have carefully gone
into "Customize" to add an item or to rearrange items on the toolbars, only
to see them disappear, or revert to their previous locations when word has
quit and then opened again.

Word 2001
Hi,
I still have not resolved this issue of "Work Menu Loses Documents". I set
up 5 or 6 items in work menu. Then holdin gthe shift key I opened the file
menu and "Saved All". I quit word. Opened it. And all items I just had
placed on the work menu were gone. What reappeared were items I have 'added
to" months ago.
Also, there is an icon that can be taken from All Commands in Customize also
called "Save All". The icon is three floppy discs stacked up. The
"Description" For this in commands is "Save All (SHIFT+ menu)", same as
Daiya's explanation, and "Saves all open files in this application.
I tried clicking that icon also and it didn't save items in the work menu
either.
I reviewed all NG " Work Menu Loses Documents" posts and I believe the issue
may never have been resolved there. I'm replying from the most recent post
which doesn't include the whole thread, so I include a couple of quotes from
previous NG posts on this issue below.
Thanks, Rafael

Hi Daiya:
Yes, you are right: I did think it was stored in Normal, and as your
testing proves, I was wrong.
Something like two years ago, I asked out Technical Lead to get us a list of
what settings are stored in which preferences files. The list is readily
available on the Microsoft web site for PC Word.
But so far, I have had no response. Sorry about that.
Cheers

The work menu isn't stored in the Normal template,
Are you sure? John McGhie seems to think it is. If not, where is it
stored?
Yeah, I tried to ask John about that but I think he missed it. I guess all
I really know is that when I quit Word and drag the prefs file to the
desktop, my Work menu has vanished when I re-open.
I'll go try the same test with Normal. Yep, still got my Work menu. So I
think it's stored in prefs.
This may be a win/Mac difference, because I don't think the mysterious
windows "registry" works the same way as a preferences file, so that may be
where John is coming from.
