work schedules

Q

quest

Hey
I am needing a program that can make simple work schedules. I just need a program that I can plug my tasks into, tell how many total hours the task runs and then for it to tell me when to get my employees to do it, down to the hour. Say I have two projects that last 3 hours and 6 hours, I want to be able to tell the program, "hey, task a lasts 3 hours, task b lasts 6 hours" and for the program to tell me, "ok, start task a at 7:30 on the start date that I set and start task b at 10:30 after finishing task a. Is this something that project does? If not does anyone know any software that does do this kind of scheduling? Thanks

Q:

Project Server will do all of what you're seeking, but
rolling out this program requires a significant amount of
time and money. While a simple installation on a single
server doesn't take long to complete (assuming you have
some basic functional knowledge of SQL, etc.), you'll
need to do some serious planning before implementation to
avoid impeding functionality. From what you've posted,
you might consider a scrappy project manager and MS Excel
instead of Project Server.

Good Luck!

Hi,

No need even for Project server, this is Resource Leveling, a basic Project
functionality.
Project Standard will do.

Yes, sure.
You need to enter each task, iyts expected duration, who will do it (the
combination of these two allows Project to calculate Work), links between
tasks if there are any (you cannot start work on the roff till the walls are
made), tehn ask Project to Level resource load.

Yeah, I was planning on using project standard. I need it to tell me the
time and day to start a task. I also need this to be able to be printed out
in something readable for my supervisors, just something that tells me the
task who's doing the task what time on what day they should start the task,
when they should finish the task and what task they are to start on after
they finish that task. I know it's kind of specific but can project standard
do that?

Hi,

Just type 3h.
If you want "3" to mean 3 hours go to Tools, Options, Schedule, Duration is
entered in...
And if you wan to convert existings days into hours go to Tools, Macro,
Macros, Format Duration

how do you get to set the duration in hours? I can only get it to set in
days

Hi,

That unfortunately is not a feature. Logical, since many tasks can have two
or more successors, other tasks may have no sucessors at all, so there is
not necessarily just one "the next in the order"
If you have a field that will determine the order you want to see, go to
Project, Sort, Sort by...
You probably will have to cross out "keep outline structure" and if so, you
shall also have to go to Tools, Options, View, and cross out "show summary
tasks".
