work to complete task is fraction of duration per day

uI am trying to figure out how to disconnect Work from Duration. If I have a
task that requires 4 hours of work per day for 5 days, I want Work to be 20
hours and the duration to be 5 days. How do I do that?

You need to look at the resource assignment. Project will ALWAYS keep the
identity W=D*U in balance. So 20 hours of work over the course of 5 days
duration means the resource assigned is assigned to work at a 50% level
(assuming your calendar calls for an 8 hour per day workday). You can never
disconnect work from duration - after all, work is defined as physical
activity taking place over a measurable time period - but the resource
assignment level determines how much work is generated over a given period
of working time.
