Workbook Window Sizing Behaviour

The more I use mac:excel the more I find the green sizing button behaviour
annoying. I appreciate this is a standard mac behaviour but I invariably
want to maximise the workbook window, rather than just accommodate the data
on screen (that is what the green button does isn't it?).

Is there any way I can arrange for all workbooks (both new & existing files
opened from the drive) to open maximised?
