Workgroup Messaging

Is it true that to use Workgroup messaging with Project 2003 and Outlook
client 2003 you have to set up Project Server or Project Web Access using
the Outlook Integration Add In?

I don't know about Project 2003, but this is not true for
Project 2000. I am currently usong the work group
functionality and I do not have Project server. The
purpose of the work group functionality is to use e-mail
instead of the web or a server.

Microsoft has made an interim message handler available
for download from the following site:

Please note the multiple warnings and statements that
Microsoft does not support this message handler. The
preferred method is Project Server as both you and the
article note.

The reason I asked is because the article 818337 reports Project 2003 and
later versions do not support Workgroup Messaging automatically. It lists a
registry key and a message handler for Project 2003 but does not list the
version of Outlook (or any other mail client) that it is compatible with.

handler is compatible with. Does anyone know if it has been tested with
Outlook 2003? I am in the process of testing.

I have not had a chance to test this with Outlook 2003,
although in Project 2003 help it makes pretty extensive
reference to Outlook 2003. My *guess* would be it fine.

Previous versions of Project (2002, 2000) workgroup
message handler worked with "any 32-bit MAPI compliant"
[according to Microsoft] email program. I have had less
than stellar luck with non-microsoft email products
however (Lotus Notes etc.)

When I looked at the message handler download site it reports that it will
work with any version of Outlook after 97 so hopefully it will. Hopefully my
client just failed to install the 2003 version of the handler.

I agree using Notes as the mail client is very trying But, I have
been able to make it work (only if you install Project and MAPI before Notes
is installed)
