Working Calendars

I work for an organization which does not work from the basic 8:00am to
5:00pm calendar. Our working times are 7:45am to 4:15pm, and I know that
Project automatically defaults to the 8:00am to 5:00pm calendar. Now I
understand how to change the Standard working calendars, and I also know how
to create a new calendar with a different name to reflect our working times,
but I noticed that once I linked 2 different different projects to the same
common resource pool and changed the default working times, everything
immediately went into red overallocations. What are suggestions on the best
way to deal with the calendar for our organization?

Jackie,
When you changed the project calendar working time with your own custom
calendar, did you also insure each resource uses that custom calendar?
My guess is that you did not and that is probably the reason all
resources show overallocation.

The easiest way to coordinate resource calendars with a custom working
calendar is via the Resource Sheet. Change the Base Calendar field as
necessary.

Hope this helps.

John,
Can I change the Standard default calendar from 8:00am to 5:00pm to 7:45am
to 4:15pm or should I just change the non-default working time to reflect the
7:45am to 4:15pm?

Jackie,
I guess I don't understand your question. If you change the From and To
times under Tools/Change Working Time, Project will automatically set
the non-default working time option. In other words, users cannot change
the default values - they are fixed by the application.

You should also change the settings under Tools/Options/Calendar tab to
agree with your working time calendar, including the hours per day if it
not the standard 8 hours.

You might like to go to our MVP website at,

Working Hours.

John,
I actually clicked on the default working time in the change working times
calendar and changed that calendar to reflect 7:45 to 4:15 pm. So now when I
open that calendar, it now automatically defaults to non-default working time
7:45am to 4:15pm. So basically, what is the difference between non-default
and default working times besides the fact that Project will automatically
open with the default calendar of 8:00am to 5:00pm? Also, which would be
easier for us to change to reflect our actual working times(non-default or
default)? Or should we just create a new calendar to fit our actual working
times?

Hi Jackie,

Forgive me for bumping in, but I have the impression that there is a slight
vocabulary problem here.
Project has DEFAULT working hours (in the English version, 8-12 and 13-17).
Those can NOT be changed. NOT.
All other combinations will be called Non Default.

But you can change the working hours of the calendar called STANDARD;
This one is not automatically related to the default working hours (except
that when you open Project the first time, the standard calendar has the
default working hours)

And of course, you can create new calendars at will!

Hope this helps,

Jackie,
I thought I explained that users can NOT change the default working time
values, but apparently I wasn't clear enough. I also see that Jan has
reinforced what I said.

I suggest you make a copy of the Standard calendar and then re-name it
to whatever you want. Set the working time hours to be those of your
company. Once again, whatever working time hours you set will be
non-default.

I went in and changed my view on the toolbars options/resource management and
would like to know how to get that normal view back. I went in and
deselected resource management, but it still shows the same.
