Working hours missmatch

L

Lynn

Hi all,

I have a project with a linked resource pool which was
origionally setup with working hours of 8hr per day (40
hrs per week).

After all the information has been input, I now have had
to change the working hours down to 7.5 per day (37.5 per
week)

Project is really struggling to accommodate this change. A
1d task assigned to 1 resource gives me: 100% at 40h, if I
change the resource to 37.5 hrs I get 107%

If I change the resource info to 100% and 37.5 hrs the
task duration is then less than 1 day.

HOWEVER ... if I remove the resource and reapply the
information is inserted correctly.

New tasks are always correct.

This is all working with the same project file.

Help!

Hi Lynn,

Firstly... Poor resource guy.... 1d=40hrs work. You must
have a whip handy :)

Otherwise, there are several ways to solve this problem.
MSP works with the formula Work=Duration*Units

If I understand your problem properly, you want to change
40hrs=1wk*100%
to
37,5hrs=1wk*100%

As you can see you have two fixed items, which MSP cannot
handle!!! If I was you I would open a new clean mpp and
include the feilds "type" & "effort Driven" Play around
with tasks simulating your problem, and see which result
the most pain free.

This is just another example of the importance of getting
your template correct before letting loose on plans. MSP
does not take kindly to sudden and aggressive changes like
the one you are attempting. Good luck

Kindest regards
Robert

At the moment 40 h per day sound about right.

Your option 2 is the one we had started working on:
creating a new project and starting again ;-( In the long
run I think it will be faster.

Many thanks

Hi Lynn,

To understand what Project does (you are the one struggling you know, not
Project) you have to bear in mind that it does not internally know what "a
day" is.
Once you have entered any time "thing" (duration, work) it is stored
internally in MINUTES.
So when you change the definition of "a day" from say 8 hrs to 7.5 hrs, a
task you entered as 1 day (and which to Project now is known as a 480
minutes task) will be recalculated to 480/450 = 1,07 days.

Your choices are limited:

- either re-eenter teh duration as x days (with the new definition of 450
minutes)
- or code a VBA macro multiplu-ying all durations by 450/480...

but the main thing you may learn from this is:

Before entering ANY task info into Project, make sure that the project
calendar and teh info in Tools, Options, Calendar is right.

Hello everybody
I think that another solution may have been to copy, before modifying the Hours per day and Hours
per week parameters and the Calendar, all the durations in the Text1 field. Then, when all the
corrections are made, to copy back the Text1 in the Duration field.
