Working with Multiple Adjoining Pictures and Boxes

I have trouble working around pictures and boxes with pictures in them
when there are a bunch together. Especially adding, deleting, and
resizing etc. Sometimes if there is a border around a whole page
(the whole page is in a box), I don't know how to get rid of the box.

I get this stuff mostly from copying a page off the internet and
wanting to format it to get rid of some pictures or boxes.

I'm usually trying to cut or delete in the blind so to speak. Is there
a way to see the formatting easier, like the way WordPerfect was years
ago when you could turn the formatting symbols on?

Alternately, what could I study up on to learn how to work with these
things better?
