I think that applying the character style would be the
best way.
Applying formatting to an individual paragraph will not
affect the style.

When you apply a style, it applies the attributes,
however, you can make changes to the text in the
paragraphs, which for the time being, will take on those
attributes as well. If you reapply the style, remember,
bolding/italics etc is character formatting and should not
be affected by your paragraph style; unless your style
includes character formatting for that paragraph. So if
your style has italics etc in it and you reapply the style
to a paragraph, it will change.

Thanks. What you describe has been what I have observed,
but I have not tested it very much, and I sometimes don't
know for sure what will happen.
