Works and word totally messed up

I have been having problems for quite awhile with my works
program, mainly using Microsoft Word.

My problems started out simple, but now they've changed to
extreme. I no longer can even use word anymore. I go to
open a document and get the computer trying to access the
floppy drive than I end up getting several popups that no
matter which way I answer either ok or cancel I can not
figure out what is wrong or how to fix it. I can not
uninstall the programs nor can I reinstall either. This
is the worse case I have ever seen with this program and I
have fixed and repaired a lot of computers in my field of
work. I am a studying to be a computer repair technician
and have 10 years of experience with building, repairing,
and troubleshooting, but still do not have a clue what is
wrong this time and doesn't it figure that this time, the
time I can't fix it, it has to be on my own computer...
how ironic.

I can describe the popups and step by step what happens to
whoever thinks they may be able to help me, but I am not
about to go pay some repair person forty dollars an hour
that I myself should be making before I decide to say
screw it and just reformat my whole frickin harddrive
instead then start fresh. I hate to do that considering
it would take 40 cds written to backup this thing, but
that is my next step if I can not figure this out.

Anyone with some valid suggestions or that thinks they can
help. Please post me and I will post back accordingly.

Much appreciated.

Start by going through all the troubleshooting steps at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm, then come back
and report the results. If you're trying to run Word freestanding (not
starting it from the Works Task Launcher), then it is advisable to uninstall
the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word.

After further reading in this newsgroup I have noticed
alot of problems with word and opening documents, as well
as reinstalling or uninstalling. I also noticed alot of
tech advice, which I was surprised. Therefore I wanted to
describe the popups and the events happening further, so
that whoever reads this has more idea of what is occuring
on my computer.

1. I go to open any document
2. A popup comes up saying windows installer, preparing to
install
Without doing anything then I get another popup saying:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a cd-rom or other
removable disk that is not available. Insert the Micro
Word 2000 SR-1 disk and click ok.
Below that is says
Use feature from:
(here is a pull down menu with only one choice; microsoft
word 2000) and then next to this is a browse button.
3. I have tried to browse and located the file that it
says it wants manually myself and hit it or I have also
tried cancel-- neither got me very far...

If I hit cancel the following popups occur.
1. An error occurred and this feature is no longer
functioning properly. Please run setup and
select "repair..." to restore the application
(Note, duh I tried this like 100 times)
2. I hit okay and get this one: The selected Assistant
character is not available. This feature is not currently
installed. Would you like to install it now?
(this one i really could careless either way, but I
have tried yes and no....

I could go on and on about what I have tried and the
numberous popups i get each time no matter what I've done
and what different things I've tried, bottom line is I
don't want to waste mine or your time anymore. I can't
uninstall, I can't reinstall, I am sick of this problem, I
am begging for help but really don't think it's fixable
without just saying forget it, and reformating my dang
harddrive and I have way too much on it to consider
backing it up first, I am about to throw this into a
fire... and i cry as i type this letter. I have so many
important documents on this damn thing, I can't afford to
lose........... Please help me

I suspect Word from Works Suite came preinstalled on your PC and they
used an Administrative Installation Point installation. The problem
here is that the files the installer is looking for are not on your
PC.

Even if this isn't the case, obtain the following utility so you can
correct the Registry and point the Windows Installer to your
installation CD. When you use the utility remove only the reference to
Word 2000 and then reinstall Word:

MS Installer Cleanup utility for Office 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=238413

Note this utility only cleans up Windows Installer files and it does
not uninstall Word.

Also, if Word 2000 does not appear in the Windows Installer Clean-up
list then post back and we'll go from there. :)
