Works- Word 2002 drop down folder list on Open, Save As dialog

D

David Mayhew

On a PC with windows XP Home and MS Works - in Word 2002 I
am having a problem with the "look in" and 'save as'
control that is supposed to drop down the folder list -
all other icons on the 'look in' 'save as' bar light up
when the cursor is placed over them but the drop down does
not respond - if selected get a 'not responding' message.

I suspect the control has been overwritten by a non
functioning version - do you know the identity of this
control and how it can be replaced. The same or similar
control seems to work OK in wordpad and notepad. I have
applied all XP recommended updates and office xp updates.

Thanks Beth - I'll try your solution.
BTW after filing this request I got hundreds of emails
containing viruses so I am not too happy about that -
hope you aren't having the same problem.

Hi David,

I'm sorry to hear you were attacked by the Swen virus. :-(

Many of us in the newsgroups were attacked as well. Some are still
under attack, receiving one or two every *minute*. <sigh>

Apparently they are harvesting email addresses from the newsgroups and
you should munge your email address when posting. I munged mine and
the attacks died off almost immediately. Perhaps use something like:
(e-mail address removed). That way real people can figure out how
to obtain your correct email address should they need to contact you.
It's also best to modify the domain name rather than your user name so
the email virus/spam is returned instead of adding more traffic to
your email host.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Unfortunately, there's a serious problem with viruses right now. This
Newsgroup is regularly being farmed for email addresses. These days you need
to mung your email address whenever posting in public places. Use something
along the lines:

(e-mail address removed) or the (e-mail address removed)
