Worksheet Error .xls]

When I try to rename a worksheet, whatever name I type in, excel rename
it with a prefix of .xls] For example if I name a sheet newyork i
will rename the sheet .xls]newyork
Then, if I try to change the name, to get rid of the prefix (.xls]) i
gives me an error message saying I have too many characters in nam
(over 31) or I'm using special characters in name (neither of which ar
true??)

Any suggestions on why this is happening and how I can correct thi
problem?

Sbernste,

To get a file name with no extension, there was a time when you could use a
name like "MyFile." (with the period, but no extension). This doesn't seem
to work these days in Office programs, though it still does in other apps I
have.

Note that you wouldn't be able to open such a file by double-clicking it in
a folder if there's no extension. You'll have to open the app (Excel), then
open the file within the App. SOme folks don't know how to do that, and
rely totally on double-clicking the file name.

Does your filename have []'s in it?

If yes, then try closing the file and use windows explorer to rename your
workbook (and don't include either of those square brackets).

Then see what happens...

Steve,

I completely misunderstood your question. Forget that.

Try Start - Run - excel.exe /regserver. Then start Excel normally and try
saving a file.
