Worth upgrading?

Michael Ray Brown

I'm using FP 2000 to maintain a single Web site. I've read that FP 2003 is
a big improvement over previous versions, particularly in generating cleaner
code. Would it be worth the expense to upgrade? And would I still be able
to use my current theme (Postmodern) with FP 2003?

If you are happy with FP2000, there is no reason to change unless you plan to use the new features.
FP2003 still generate the same code for themes, shared borders, etc. However there is a option to
"Optimize" your code, however this stop rendering of some FP components, like forms.

Thomas is right. However if you get the urge, Postmodern is available on my
FP 2003. Themes that I had downloaded for FP 2000 are also available.

In my opinion, Dynamic Web Templates alone is reason enough to upgrade.

DWTs don't auto update on FP extensions, so if you only work with server-based webs, they are not
very usefully.

I am not against change, however if the change is a personal choice and the change will provide a
benefit, then I have no problem changing. However FP2002 and FP2003 offer me no additional benefits
in the work I do.

That is like saying that people need to by a new car every year, just because it is a new version.

I use DWTs on only server-based Web sites and they are an immense help to
me! When I create a new page (and I do very often), just create a new blank
page and apply my DWT. Done!

I was thorough when I created my DWT. I don't ever update it.

Ok, then if you never updated DWT, then why use it, just create a page with your layout, save it
then do Save As, as needed to create new pages.

I guess you can save a few clicks by using the DWT the way you are using it.

Fold includes into the picture and you have a workhorse.

If Jim is like me, I add my content and save. Then I remember that I didn't
use Save As! Bummer, 'cause now my "template" has got all this content in
it that I don't really want there....

Like that.

Thomas,

How do you run FrontPage 2000 on your Commodore Vic-20? ;)

I seem to recall reading about some unresolved issues around the updating Wizard
being fully functional, which to me would be one of the reasons to upgrade (if
there werent issues)

When I create a page to be used as template, it has all of the common elements that will be use on
the site which include FP Includes, ASP Includes, based table layout, etc. Then I do save as to
create "template" pages for each section (I store section in different folders, so any ASP Includes
must have the links changed manually), then I use the template page in the folder to create all
pages need for that folder or level. I also at the time will create what I think is the required
number of pages.

Exactly! Just one of many reasons why DWTs are vastly superior. There are
many others as well. For example, I do a lot of table editing, etc. in code
view. Because my DWT protects my general layout, I don't have to worry
about screwing up a complex table when I edit a particular page.

There are many more benefits.

I do 99% of my work in HTML/Code view as well, but I rarely have to edit pages once designed, since

Wow! All of a sudden the "few clicks" I am saving that you mentioned before

Much of my content is also dynamic from SQL Server. I think that I just
have a different kind of site than you do.
