Wrestling with Page Numbering...

I have a document with mixed pages - the first part is Portrait and the
second part Landscape. I want my page numbers to all be at the bottom when
the document is bound as a book. I figured out (to my delight) how to get
the footer in and I can manually put an accent line...and I was able to
remove the text for the footers I already had. However, the accent line from
my original footer still runs across the long edge of my page. I really need
to get rid of this! I can't seem to select it - when I click on it, I get a
cursor like I was on a horizontal line of a table. Aaargh! So close!

Sorry - in my zeal to solve the mystery, I forgot some important info. I'm
using Word 2007. I originally created my footer using (I believe) Page
Number -> Bottom of Page -> Accent Bar 2. I'm wondering if I need to create
a brand new file and start over with page numbering. I'm nervous - it's
really six documents with a LOT of formatting and work that I can't afford to
lose. I'd rather rig it with white boxes covering the footing, publish to
PDF, and call it a day. Ideally, though, I would really like to do it right
for efficient long term use.

In the Editing section of the home tab of the ribbon, use the Select
pulldown and from it select the "Select Objects" item. You should then be
able to select and delete the line.

Thanks for your efforts to help. I tried that (and tried again after reading
your post) but I'm quite sure it's not an object. I'm really familiar with
lines that are objects, even the ones that "magically" appear when you use
repeated hyphens or underscores. This did not happen.

When I created my page numbering, I chose a form with "Accent Bar" in the
title. When I try to remove the page numbering and/or the footer, the accent
bar remains. With "Select Objects" it acts like nothing is there. I can
click all around and on it, but nothing selects (unlike when I select an
actual object). The only way I can get its attention is to have the i-bar
and then mouse over it - it changes the cursor to two horizontal lines with
an arrow above and below and allows me to move it vertically. This reminds
me of sizing a row in a table.

I've inserted the Accent Bar 2 page number, and the only bar I see is a pipe
character between the page number and the word "Page." I have to say I don't
understand this format in the first place: why have the word "Page" *after*
the number and why formatted as yellow? It's a dead-stupid design in the
first place.

So you inserted it and there was no light gray accent bar horizontally above
it?! There is in mine and it's quite stubborn. Maybe it's somehow something
set up for all footers or something. Desperate to finish this project, I
covered it with a white box and inserted the portrait page numbering on those
landscape pages. I'm still curious to know how to get rid of it, but my
workaround should hold I guess.

As for the word page after it...thanks for making me doubt the numbering I
put in my entire book! ha ha. I have section page numbers, though, and I
think it looks pretty good. I'll run it by the others who are
proofing/providing input. Thanks for responding! I'm even more curious now.

With the selection in the word Page in the foote, rGo to the Home tab of the
Ribbon and from the Paragraph Section, click on the Borders pulldown and you
will see that the Top Border item has an Orange Background, indicating that
a Top Border is applied to the paragraph. Click on that item to remove the
border or select the No Border item.

Well, that's bizarre. Last night (about 8.5 hours ago) I posted the
following:

"Okay, wait. It's not light gray here; it's yellow (though it would print
gray on a monochrome printer). I have a hard time seeing it because my paper
color is "ivory." It is in fact a "Top Border." Place the insertion point in
the footer (page number) and select the Home tab. Click on the arrow beside
the Borders button and either click off the Top Border button or click on
the No Border button, and this will remove it."

That message did not show up. Neither did a reply to Doug this morning. So
now I'm wondering if there's some "banned" word in the text above.

From this description, if I had read it carefully, it should have been
obvious that the "object" in question is a paragraph border (as I discovered
last night when I investigated further; unfortunately, the reply I posted
then was eaten by the server). But I took you at your word when you said you
knew how to deal with the paragraph borders that "that 'magically' appear
when you use repeated hyphens or underscores."

From this description, your line is clearly a paragraph border. The article
to which Doug referred you
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm) does explain
how to remove such borders. I discovered last night, upon further
investigation, that there is in fact a yellow (not gray) border above the
footer, and it can be removed, as Doug instructed, by turning off the Top
Border or selecting No Border. I posted to this effect last night, but
several of my posts last night and this morning have been eaten by the
server because I evidently used a word the filters don't like.

My word was true. This border did NOT appear from repeated hyphens or
underscores. That was the help someone gave me earlier. This appeared when
I inserted my border. I understand you may have been frustrated when your
posts were not showing up, but there is no need to imply my word was not
true. I used to do tech support so I know the temptation to think the user
does not know what he or she is doing. It stinks to now be the user and have
that thought about you.

THAT'S IT! I was looking everywhere for that - that's why I kept describing
it as being like part of a table! (Note: this is not the only place I've
posted.) It's a border! I was stuck on the "accent bar" title of the page
number I chose; I thought it was something different. I've tested with a new
document - this border is inserted automatically with the footer I chose.
Thank you thank you thank you. Curiosity no longer has to kill this KAT.

By the way...this is my first significant project on Word 2007. I have a
TON of experience with the old Word and also with PowerPoint 2007. I have
used a border, but only when I had inserted it myself - I could not remember
where/what it was. (Fatigue from this being the end of a long project did
not help.) I've hardly ever used footers at all in Word...never really had
to.

More than my document looking awesome, I learned SO much! Thank you again.

I would recommend as a professional that you use a discussion group like this
to discuss and answer questions, not argue lest you give your users a bad
taste for your product.

If you want to win, okay. YOU WIN. Whatever it is you're trying to prove,
consider it proven and you are the victor. As for me...I have a book that's
done correctly now thanks to Doug. I'd rather be me.
