Writing Numbers Outside Rows

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I am trying to leave numbers #1, #2, #3, etc outside the rows I have made but can't get the cursor to go there to type the numbers. The cursor only goes inside the row of the column. How do I get the cursor to go outside the row of the column?
thanks.

Hi,

it is unclear what exactly you are trying to do. Do you want to create a
numbered list, or do you want to number the lines of your current
document? If it is the latter, click on Format>Document, switch to the
Layout tab and click on the Line Numbers button. If it is the former,
post back with more details, and somebody will give you the required
instructions.

You can't. Word doesn't work like that.

A Word document is not a "blank sheet of paper" it is "empty".

You can't place any text outside the margins, because there is no "paper"
there to support it.

You need to make your column wide enough to contain the numbers as text. It
would be best to do this as a Table. Create a Word table, with one column
for the numbers and another column for the text.

If you select the existing text and then go to Table>Convert>Text to table,
Word will turn your selection into a one-column table for you.

Then go to the Table menu and add a column to the left to hold the numbers.

Cheers
