Writing text

When writing I text I would like to be able to substitute existing text as I go along without having to make a lot of changes in Tools. When I used Word in Windows, there was a simple button to press, to change from NOT substituting text to Substituting. Not sure I use the proper English terms, in Swedish it used to be called 'överskrivning'. It drives me nuts, that it's so difficult to find info about something so basal!

Hello Nina;

I believe the feature you're referring to is called Overtype Mode.

It isn't readily available because it's the more complicated, older
technique for replacing content. Many users have gotten away from it
altogether. The more common & more efficient method in modern software (for
most people) is to simply select the text to be replaced & type the new
content to replace it - it isn't even necessary to delete the original
content first - that happens automatically with the first new keystroke -
let alone be concerned about when to turn Overtype on & off.

If you're one of those who does prefer to use it you can do either or both
of 2 customizations:

1- Use Tools> Customize Keyboard to select Overtype from the All Commands
category & assign a keystroke to toggle it on/off, or

2- Use View> Customize Toolbars & Menus to add that command to a toolbar.
