WRM/IRM and .NET service

I'm trying out the WRM/IRM stuff within office where it uses the "trial
service" and associates w/ a .NET passport. This whole concept is very
appealing to me but am wondering two things. One, could this be considered
the same as a digital signature and two what if Microsoft pulls this service?
Will there be an equivalent purchasable service or is there already?

I would plan to use this as a method of signing/protecting documents in a
medical office and at the moment no protection outside the program which the
documents are stored exist (so this is better than current). Thing is if I
start doing this i need assurance that I can access and continue to restrict
access for the indefinite future so the whole "trial" thing scares me.

Thanks for any info people can provide (open to other inexpensive option
suggestions too)
