wrong autoformating ruining data irreversibly

When entering or pasting data into a cell; automformating forces formats
that it is guessing wrong. Ex, I paste a list of 200 items that each have an
item number and Excel forces a time format to the number ("1" => Excel:
"1:00") or enter "10/20" and Excel forces a date, or enter "-" and Excel
forces a negative number of negative cell. I have tried much to stop this and
I am at a loss. Once Excel literally changes the number entered, the
oriiginal can not be retrieved (I never heard of number formating that
changes the initial value of a number).
