Wrong date format

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Spreadsheets generated from built in workbooks all default to $ currency and m/d/yyyy dates. I've checked OS date settings and I've restarted Excel (several times). The only way to get the correct format is to use a custom date and select the £ sign for each money column.
Is this a known glitch and is there an easier fix than messing with each sheet as it is created?

This was a known glitch several update3s ago. Make sure both Excel and your
OS are fully updated.

Excel was already up to date and so was the OS. Still get the problem though.
Has the fix been issued?
