Wrong document opens

?Windows XP
When I click to open a word ( .docx) document, a different worddocument
opens; usually a random document I had open earlier in the day. What
causes this?

Where are you clicking? If you are clicking a link (for example in the File
menu), it could be pointing to the wrong item.
