wrong number of messages to be received in progress window

The number of messages to be received in the progress window is incorrect. No clear pattern to it. Version 12.1.4 (081024). How can one fix it?

Can you be more specific? Is it too high? Too low? What leads you to
believe the count is incorrect?

The progress window shows a certain number of messages to be received but the actual number of messages received (including all junk mail) is much less. These are messages from a POP account.

Everything was working fine before I upgraded from Entourage 2004 to Entourage 2008. Nothing has changed on the side of the POP account.

I cannot identify a precise pattern for the problem. Often, but not always, the digit 3 appears in front of the correct number (like showing 38 instead of 8). At other times it is different: for example, it would show 22 instead of 2, or 46 instead of 16.

Hmmmm, could be a strange symptom of database corruption. If you create a
new Identity in Entourage does the problem happen there?
