Wrong numbering format in TOC

My generated TOC will only display in roman numerals. I would like it
to display regular numbers but there does not seem to be any option to
change it.

I have a section for the TOC with roman numeral page numbering in the
footer. Does this mean that the TOC has to be roman numerals as well? I
tried entering another TOC in another section that has regular
numbering, but Word insists that I'm getting roman numerals no matter
where I insert the TOC or what I try to change.

Any help would be appreciated.

The TOC should display page numbers in the format used on the given page.
That is, it should list front matter headings with roman numerals and
headings in the body of the document with arabic page numbers. How did you
insert the page numbers? Do they have any switches added manually?

Thanks for replying. I had to create a new document which seemed to fix
the problem. I think I ran into problems when I inserted the roman
numeral page numbers in the TOC section as a field, as opposed to
Insert>Page Numbers.

The reason I did this was because I was getting a broken line at the
page numbers in my footer. I have since taken out the border from the
page number style and all is well now.

Word is so flaky. I think that instead of coming out every year or two
with new versions and lots of "cool" features, they should take some
time and test the hell out of the features they already have.

I'll tell you right now, if it wasn't for Framemaker, I'd become a
janitor, or something, instead of a technical writer.

I strongly recommend using Insert Page Number on the Header and Footer
toolbar rather than Insert | Page Numbers (which inserts the page number in
a frame, which is what caused your border problem). I have never had any
problem doing it this way. You can access the Format Page Number dialog from
the H&F toolbar as well, to change the format from arabic to roman.
