Wrong type size/stuff at bottom of file

Please excuse my ignorance, but today my Word files are
coming up in 10-point type -- I use 12-pt -- with a ton
of formatting and other information at the bottom of the
file. It also does not retain soft returns. I know
there's a way to fix it, but can't remember and can't
find it in help.

Is it possible that in Word's File/Open dialog window
the "Files of type" filter has become set to "Recover
text from any file (*.*)"? Ifit has then just change it
to something more appropriate such as "Word documents
(*.doc) or whatever you need.
