WSS and Project Server on different servers?

Is it possible to install MS Project Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint
Services on two entirely different servers (on two potentially different
subnets) and have them integrate correctly?

I would assume so, but all of the questions I seem to come across only
reference installing them on the same machine/server via virtual servers.

I'm trying to assure my IT dept. that our 'new' installation of MS Project
Server can work our 'old' installation of WSS, and that another (local)
installation of WSS is unnecessary. Installing a local copy of WSS is
*emphatically* out of the question.

I have Project Server installed on Server2003, and WSS and SQL on
SBS2003 server and it works fine.

Exactly right, the Project Server (and Live Communications Server) is
on one machine, and the SBS (which includes WSS and SQL) is on another
machine.
