WSS Project Workspace - autonumber field?

Hi, I need to set up an autonumber ref field in one of my WSS lists..is this
possibel or must I do something in SQL to get this to work?

Is it not possible to use the ID field? this is an incremental value....

could you provide more details, as I am not too sure what you are trying to
achieve....
