X button greys out after opening excel and will not allow you to close.

After opening excel with a blank workbook, or if you
minimize the application, or begin working with a blank
workbook, the X button in the upper right hand corner
greys out and will not allow you to close the application
with it. You have to go to FILE, then Exit from the menu
options to close the application. Also after taking this
option, Excel automatically opens the save as window
before it will allow you to exit. I have repaired,
removed and reinstalled, and applied all available
updates. Whats up with this app?
