X of y page error

I am using Office 2003 professional and now when I use the x of y page
numbering I get the following in the footer. Page { PAGE } of { NUMPAGES }
The other strange thing is when I just copied and pasted it, it pasted
correctly as with the correct numbers. I have already renamed the normal.dot
and that did not fix it.

Press Alt+F9 to toggle the view from field codes to field results.

OK I just figured it out. I had the "view field codes" checked. I unchecked
it and now my screen view is correct. I had already gone thru all the things
referenced on the troubleshooting page and decided to try some other things.
