Xl template won't open

OS 9.2.2 XL 2001

I¹ve created a workbook template that now will not open. When I access this
template through the Project Gallery and click on the file, XL attempts to
open the file but the progress bars proceeds only about a 10th of the bar
before stopping. The clock icon appears on the desktop but its hands aren¹t
spinning. The mouse is not frozen but I can¹t cancel the process of opening
the file by pressing command and period (.). I have to force quite XL. This
work book has 3 sheets. The first contains simple formulas which have worked
with no problems. The other 2 sheets I added last night and simply pasted
table information created in Quark 5.0 into them. No formulas, essentially
lists. What could be amiss here? Trashed the prefs to no avail.

Thanks much.

Hi,

I can think of several possibilities. It's possible something happened to
MacOS along the way. Housecleaning tasks such as rebuilding the desktop file
and using a disk utility to check for errors might be in order.

If this is the only workbook giving you trouble, it's likely that at some
step along the way the workbook file became corrupted. Does an older version
of the workbook still open fine?

It's possible there's a problem with the inserted Quark items

Give Google groups a search for the topic "Excel corrupt workbook" to find
suggestions on how to fix a corrupt workbook.

Did that. No difference.

I don't have an older version of this workbook. Truth be told, I'm teaching
myself XL so any workbook I create is either not too important or filled
with irrelevant data. I'm now doing a 'save as' on new workbooks so as to
have the insurance of a backup. I wonder though, are backups immune to any
corruption the original might experience?

The article mentions an "unexpectedly quit' scenario with an error code. I
didn't experience this. But I wonder Š

Checked the Google Groups. It seems that there are many utilities that
repair (with varying degrees of success) corrupt XL files but they are for
windows users only. Oh well Š

Hi again,

In the Save As dialog box there's an Options button. You can automatically
save a backup copy. At least you'll have something.

At Versiontracker.com there are lots of incremental backup utilities. They
let you keep old versions in an orderly fashion. The name Retrospect comes
to my mind as one such program.

I pointed to that article wondering if perhaps it was the image from Quark
that might have caused your document to become corrupt. Maybe if you
experiment some more with copying between Quark and Excel you'll solve this
mystery.
